A shire that protects its trees
Hornsby calls itself the Bushland Shire, and its rules reflect that. Under the Hornsby Development Control Plan, you generally need a permit to prune or remove any tree on private property unless it's on the short list of exempt species, such as privet, umbrella tree, rubber tree, willow and tree of heaven. Council also has a tree tool on its website that helps you check.
Heritage areas and endangered forest
Parts of the shire sit within heritage conservation areas, and some properties contain remnant Blue Gum High Forest or Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest. Both are threatened ecological communities, and exemptions may not apply there. A report from an AQF Level 5 arborist is often needed. See our Hornsby Council tree removal guide.
Big trees, tight blocks
Many Hornsby homes sit under tall blue gums, turpentines and blackbutts. Most of that work is done by climbing and rigging, with every section lowered under control.
